If i == in_len\n- 1 at that point, this is a 1-byte out-of-bounds read of an\nattacker-influenced IE buffer built from association/scan data.\n\nCommit a75281626fc8f (\"staging: rtl8723bs: fix potential\nout-of-bounds read in rtw_restruct_wmm_ie\") added the \"i + 5 <\nin_len\" guard to the match condition itself, but did not add an\nequivalent guard before the fallthrough advance, so the same class\nof OOB read remained reachable through the non-matching path.\n\nAdd an explicit bounds check before advancing to the next IE."}],"metrics":[{"cvssV3_1":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:H","baseScore":7.1,"baseSeverity":"HIGH"},"scenarios":[{"lang":"en","value":"AV:A - rtw_restruct_wmm_ie() walks WMM IEs from scanned BSS candidates filled by collect_bss_info() from over-the-air beacon and probe-response frames (OnBeacon/OnProbeRsp). The attacker must be in WiFi radio range; kernel guidance maps WiFi frame injection to Adjacent.\nAC:L - The attacker fully controls beacon/probe IE layout and can place a truncated tail IE so the walker lands at in_len-1, making the unguarded in_ie[i+1] read deterministic. wmm_enable defaults to 1, and no race or attacker-uncontrollable memory layout is required.\nPR:N - Scan and join/roam consume attacker beacon IEs before any authentication with the rogue BSS. No local account, capability, or user-namespace privilege is required.\nUI:N - RTW_ROAM_ON_EXPIRED is enabled by default, so association expiry or an attacker-driven reconnect automatically calls rtw_select_and_join_from_scanned_queue() without a new victim click. An evil-twin BSS matching the desired SSID is selected by RSSI during normal WiFi operation.\nS:U - The out-of-bounds read and any resulting kernel impact remain inside the rtl8723bs driver on the host. This is not a VM escape, IOMMU bypass, or other cross-authority boundary crossing.\nC:L - The fallthrough path reads exactly one byte past the declared IE length (in_ie[i+1] when i==in_len-1). Kernel guidance scores a strictly bounded few-byte out-of-bounds read as Low confidentiality rather than an arbitrary-read primitive.\nI:N - The bug only reads in_ie[i+1] to compute the next IE offset and then exits the loop. It does not write out of bounds or provide a data-modification or control-flow hijack primitive.\nA:H - An out-of-bounds kernel read can oops or panic on hardened, KASAN, or redzone kernels, and an adjacent attacker can retrigger the join/roam path with further crafted management frames to deny availability."}]}],"affected":[{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["drivers/staging/rtl8723bs/core/rtw_mlme.c"],"versions":[{"version":"554c0a3abf216c991c5ebddcdb2c08689ecd290b","lessThan":"e63b72c5d7336981dfc05e5cb92becff29dfea00","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"554c0a3abf216c991c5ebddcdb2c08689ecd290b","lessThan":"4420cc71841b50e31a7868ef7acb011c0e08d294","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"554c0a3abf216c991c5ebddcdb2c08689ecd290b","lessThan":"fd19b8895f8a91087e8a62f1e27b128025dabb95","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"554c0a3abf216c991c5ebddcdb2c08689ecd290b","lessThan":"28a289beaf226b30b1e6e7d7b1a2946fe2d6e852","status":"affected","versionType":"git"}]},{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["drivers/staging/rtl8723bs/core/rtw_mlme.c"],"versions":[{"version":"4.12","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","lessThan":"4.12","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.12.112","lessThanOrEqual":"6.12.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.18.52","lessThanOrEqual":"6.18.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.2.5","lessThanOrEqual":"7.2.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"7.3-rc2","lessThanOrEqual":"*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}]}],"cpeApplicability":[{"nodes":[{"operator":"OR","negate":false,"cpeMatch":[{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"4.12","versionEndExcluding":"6.12.112"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"4.12","versionEndExcluding":"6.18.52"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"4.12","versionEndExcluding":"7.2.5"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"4.12","versionEndExcluding":"7.3-rc2"}]}]}],"references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/e63b72c5d7336981dfc05e5cb92becff29dfea00"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4420cc71841b50e31a7868ef7acb011c0e08d294"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/fd19b8895f8a91087e8a62f1e27b128025dabb95"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/28a289beaf226b30b1e6e7d7b1a2946fe2d6e852"}],"title":"staging: rtl8723bs: fix OOB read in rtw_restruct_wmm_ie()","x_generator":{"engine":"bippy-1.2.0"}}}}
