That would make f_count go down to zero, and while\nthe ep->mtx locking means that the resulting file pointer tear-down will\nbe blocked until the poll returns, it means that f_count is already\ndead, and any use of it won't actually get a reference to the file any\nmore: it's dead regardless.\n\nMake sure we have a valid ref on the file pointer before we call down to\nvfs_poll() from the epoll routines."}],"metrics":[{"cvssV3_1":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","baseScore":7.8,"baseSeverity":"HIGH"},"scenarios":[{"lang":"en","value":"AV:L - The vulnerability is reached purely through local syscalls — epoll_ctl(EPOLL_CTL_ADD) to register a pollable fd, epoll_wait() to drive ep_send_events()→ep_item_poll(), and close() on the registered fd from a second thread. No network input is involved.\nAC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the race (one thread spins on close() of the registered fd, another spins on epoll_wait()), so the window can be hit repeatedly and indefinitely until won; syzbot produced a reproducer. Nothing depends on conditions outside attacker influence.\nPR:L - Only an ordinary unprivileged local user is needed — epoll requires no capabilities at all, and dma-buf fds are obtainable without privilege via /dev/dma_heap/system on Android or DRM render nodes (/dev/dri/renderD128, PRIME_HANDLE_TO_FD) on desktop/server, all reachable from inside containers and app sandboxes.\nUI:N - The attacker performs every step itself from its own threads; no action by any other user or victim process is required.\nS:U - The corruption is confined to kernel memory within the same security authority — this is a standard local kernel privilege-escalation primitive, not a VM, IOMMU, or hypervisor boundary crossing.\nC:H - vfs_poll() runs on a struct file with f_count already zero, and the resulting refcount underflow frees the file while it is still referenced, yielding a use-after-free on a SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU slot that is instantly reallocated to another struct file; reading through the stale file (f_cred, f_path, private_data) gives arbitrary kernel memory and other processes' file contents.\nI:H - The double __fput()/double file_free() plus stray refcount decrement on a live, reallocated struct file is the classic DirtyCred-style write primitive — the attacker can force premature release of a victim's file and substitute its own, enabling arbitrary file/credential overwrite and full control-flow hijack.\nA:H - syzbot's observed manifestation is a kernel general protection fault in __ep_remove (fs/eventpoll.c:825, NULL file->f_ep), and the double-free of struct file, dentry and vfsmount reliably panics the machine, so an unprivileged user can crash the kernel at will."}]}],"affected":[{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["fs/eventpoll.c"],"versions":[{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"cbfd1088e24ec4c1199756a37cb8e4cd0a4b016e","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"559214eb4e5c3d05e69428af2fae2691ba1eb784","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"4f65f4defe4e23659275ce5153541cd4f76ce2d2","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"16e3182f6322575eb7c12e728ad3c7986a189d5d","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"4efaa5acf0a1d2b5947f98abb3acf8bfd966422b","status":"affected","versionType":"git"}]},{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["fs/eventpoll.c"],"versions":[{"version":"2.6.12","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","lessThan":"2.6.12","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.15.161","lessThanOrEqual":"5.15.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.1.93","lessThanOrEqual":"6.1.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.6.33","lessThanOrEqual":"6.6.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.8.12","lessThanOrEqual":"6.8.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.9","lessThanOrEqual":"*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}]}],"cpeApplicability":[{"nodes":[{"operator":"OR","negate":false,"cpeMatch":[{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"5.15.161"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"6.1.93"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"6.6.33"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"6.8.12"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"6.9"}]}]}],"references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/cbfd1088e24ec4c1199756a37cb8e4cd0a4b016e"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/559214eb4e5c3d05e69428af2fae2691ba1eb784"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4f65f4defe4e23659275ce5153541cd4f76ce2d2"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/16e3182f6322575eb7c12e728ad3c7986a189d5d"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4efaa5acf0a1d2b5947f98abb3acf8bfd966422b"}],"title":"epoll: be better about file lifetimes","x_generator":{"engine":"bippy-1.2.0"}},"adp":[{"providerMetadata":{"orgId":"af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108","shortName":"CVE","dateUpdated":"2024-08-02T04:12:25.965Z"},"title":"CVE Program Container","references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/cbfd1088e24ec4c1199756a37cb8e4cd0a4b016e","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/559214eb4e5c3d05e69428af2fae2691ba1eb784","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4f65f4defe4e23659275ce5153541cd4f76ce2d2","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/16e3182f6322575eb7c12e728ad3c7986a189d5d","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4efaa5acf0a1d2b5947f98abb3acf8bfd966422b","tags":["x_transferred"]}]},{"metrics":[{"other":{"type":"ssvc","content":{"id":"CVE-2024-38580","role":"CISA Coordinator","options":[{"Exploitation":"none"},{"Automatable":"no"},{"Technical Impact":"partial"}],"version":"2.0.3","timestamp":"2024-09-10T17:13:59.808885Z"}}}],"title":"CISA ADP Vulnrichment","providerMetadata":{"orgId":"134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0","shortName":"CISA-ADP","dateUpdated":"2024-09-11T17:34:55.453Z"}}]}}
