`irq_desc` is a kmalloc'd object whose freed contents are groomable by heap spray.\nPR:L - `/proc/stat` is world-readable, so any unprivileged local account or container process reaches the use-after-free with no capabilities and no namespace tricks required.\nUI:N - The attacker triggers the entire path themselves with a `read()` loop; no victim action or interaction is needed.\nS:U - The stale dereference and its consequences stay entirely within the kernel's own security authority, with no crossing of a VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary.\nC:H - This is a use-after-free read of a reallocated kernel heap object, and the recovered 32-bit value is directly observable from userspace — the count of zero entries `show_irq_gap()` emits before the next IRQ statistic encodes it, leaking freed kernel heap contents.\nI:H - The use-after-free lets the attacker control the freed object's contents through heap grooming and thereby the IRQ index driving `for_each_active_irq()` iteration across genirq, cpuhotplug and io_apic consumers; per UAF scoring this memory-safety violation is treated as exploitable for integrity loss.\nA:H - The stale value makes `i - next` underflow in `show_irq_gap()`, spinning ~268 million `seq_write()` iterations inside a single unprivileged `read()`, and can stall `for_each_active_irq()` from advancing; combined with the UAF itself this yields repeatable soft lockups and oopses."}]}],"affected":[{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["kernel/irq/irqdesc.c"],"versions":[{"version":"721255b9826bd11c7a38b585905fc2dd0fb94e52","lessThan":"1c7891812d85500ae2ca4051fa5683fcf29930d8","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"721255b9826bd11c7a38b585905fc2dd0fb94e52","lessThan":"d084aa022f84319f8079e30882cbcbc026af9f21","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"721255b9826bd11c7a38b585905fc2dd0fb94e52","lessThan":"b84a8aba806261d2f759ccedf4a2a6a80a5e55ba","status":"affected","versionType":"git"}]},{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["kernel/irq/irqdesc.c"],"versions":[{"version":"6.5","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","lessThan":"6.5","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.6.34","lessThanOrEqual":"6.6.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.9.5","lessThanOrEqual":"6.9.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.10","lessThanOrEqual":"*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}]}],"cpeApplicability":[{"nodes":[{"operator":"OR","negate":false,"cpeMatch":[{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"6.5","versionEndExcluding":"6.6.34"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"6.5","versionEndExcluding":"6.9.5"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"6.5","versionEndExcluding":"6.10"}]}]}],"references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1c7891812d85500ae2ca4051fa5683fcf29930d8"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d084aa022f84319f8079e30882cbcbc026af9f21"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/b84a8aba806261d2f759ccedf4a2a6a80a5e55ba"}],"title":"genirq/irqdesc: Prevent use-after-free in irq_find_at_or_after()","x_generator":{"engine":"bippy-1.2.0"}},"adp":[{"providerMetadata":{"orgId":"af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108","shortName":"CVE","dateUpdated":"2024-08-02T04:04:25.138Z"},"title":"CVE Program Container","references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1c7891812d85500ae2ca4051fa5683fcf29930d8","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d084aa022f84319f8079e30882cbcbc026af9f21","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/b84a8aba806261d2f759ccedf4a2a6a80a5e55ba","tags":["x_transferred"]}]},{"metrics":[{"other":{"type":"ssvc","content":{"id":"CVE-2024-38385","role":"CISA Coordinator","options":[{"Exploitation":"none"},{"Automatable":"no"},{"Technical Impact":"partial"}],"version":"2.0.3","timestamp":"2024-09-10T17:08:17.872806Z"}}}],"title":"CISA ADP Vulnrichment","providerMetadata":{"orgId":"134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0","shortName":"CISA-ADP","dateUpdated":"2024-09-11T17:34:42.745Z"}}]}}
