Callers need to\ntake care to handle these errors to avoid returning decrypted (shared)\nmemory to the page allocator, which could lead to functional or security\nissues.\n\nThe netvsc driver could free decrypted/shared pages if\nset_memory_decrypted() fails. Check the decrypted field in the gpadl\nto decide whether to free the memory."}],"metrics":[{"cvssV3_1":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","baseScore":9.8,"baseSeverity":"CRITICAL"},"scenarios":[{"lang":"en","value":"AV:N - The attacker is the untrusted hypervisor/host, which reaches the guest only through the paravirtualized VMBus/hypercall interface rather than any network stack; from the guest's perspective this is the local virtual-hardware path (`tdx_map_gpa()` / `hv_mark_gpa_visibility()` return values). No network, adjacent-network, or physical access to the guest is involved.\nAC:L - The host deterministically controls the outcome — it simply returns an error from the TDVMCALL<MapGPA> or HVCALL_MODIFY_SPARSE_GPA_PAGE_HOST_VISIBILITY hypercall at a moment of its choosing, and the PTE encryption bit has already been cleared by `__change_page_attr_set_clr()` before that call. It can also force unlimited retries via suspend/resume and VF hot-plug cycles, so nothing depends on conditions outside its control.\nPR:N - In the confidential-computing threat model the host holds zero privileges inside the guest — that is the entire premise of TDX/SEV-SNP — and needs no guest account or capability to fail the conversion hypercall. The vulnerable path runs at netvsc probe during guest boot with no guest-side authentication.\nUI:N - The GPADL for the receive/send buffers is established automatically during `netvsc_init_buf()` at driver probe on every guest boot, and the host can independently drive further detach/attach cycles via `netvsc_suspend`/`netvsc_resume`. No guest user action is required.\nS:U - The impacted resources are guest kernel and guest userspace memory, which fall under the same security authority as the vulnerable component (the guest Linux kernel). This is a host-to-guest attack, not an escape from the vulnerable component's scope such as a guest-to-host breakout.\nC:H - Up to 46MB of still-shared pages are returned to the buddy allocator and recycled for arbitrary kernel and user data, which the untrusted host can then read in plaintext — keys, credentials, and any guest secret that lands in those pages. This is a total loss of confidential-VM confidentiality, repeatable across reinit cycles.\nI:H - The same pages remain host-*writable*, so the host can modify arbitrary reallocated slab objects, page-cache contents, and function pointers in the guest, yielding an arbitrary-write primitive and code execution inside the guest kernel.\nA:H - Guest reuse of pages whose private/shared state disagrees with the guest's expectation triggers #VE/#VC exceptions and memory corruption in arbitrary recycled kernel structures, leading to guest kernel panic. The host can induce this at will."}]}],"affected":[{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["drivers/net/hyperv/netvsc.c"],"versions":[{"version":"d4dccf353db80e209f262e3973c834e6e48ba9a9","lessThan":"a56fe611326332bf6b7126e5559590c57dcebad4","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"d4dccf353db80e209f262e3973c834e6e48ba9a9","lessThan":"4aaed9dbe8acd2b6114458f0498a617283d6275b","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"d4dccf353db80e209f262e3973c834e6e48ba9a9","lessThan":"bbf9ac34677b57506a13682b31a2a718934c0e31","status":"affected","versionType":"git"}]},{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["drivers/net/hyperv/netvsc.c"],"versions":[{"version":"5.16","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","lessThan":"5.16","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.6.31","lessThanOrEqual":"6.6.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.8.10","lessThanOrEqual":"6.8.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"6.9","lessThanOrEqual":"*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}]}],"cpeApplicability":[{"nodes":[{"operator":"OR","negate":false,"cpeMatch":[{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.16","versionEndExcluding":"6.6.31"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.16","versionEndExcluding":"6.8.10"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.16","versionEndExcluding":"6.9"}]}]}],"references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/a56fe611326332bf6b7126e5559590c57dcebad4"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4aaed9dbe8acd2b6114458f0498a617283d6275b"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/bbf9ac34677b57506a13682b31a2a718934c0e31"}],"title":"hv_netvsc: Don't free decrypted memory","x_generator":{"engine":"bippy-1.2.0"}},"adp":[{"title":"CISA ADP Vulnrichment","metrics":[{"other":{"type":"ssvc","content":{"id":"CVE-2024-36911","role":"CISA Coordinator","options":[{"Exploitation":"none"},{"Automatable":"no"},{"Technical Impact":"partial"}],"version":"2.0.3","timestamp":"2024-05-30T18:46:51.712672Z"}}}],"providerMetadata":{"orgId":"134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0","shortName":"CISA-ADP","dateUpdated":"2024-06-04T17:47:48.543Z"}},{"providerMetadata":{"orgId":"af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108","shortName":"CVE","dateUpdated":"2024-08-02T03:43:49.175Z"},"title":"CVE Program Container","references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/a56fe611326332bf6b7126e5559590c57dcebad4","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4aaed9dbe8acd2b6114458f0498a617283d6275b","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/bbf9ac34677b57506a13682b31a2a718934c0e31","tags":["x_transferred"]}]}]}}
