NFSv3 and\nNFSv4 both define file size as an unsigned 64-bit type. Thus there\nis a range of valid file size values an NFS client can send that is\nalready larger than Linux can handle.\n\nCurrently decode_fattr4() dumps a full u64 value into ia_size. If\nthat value happens to be larger than S64_MAX, then ia_size\nunderflows. I'm about to fix up the NFSv3 behavior as well, so let's\ncatch the underflow in the common code path: nfsd_setattr()."}],"metrics":[{"cvssV3_1":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H","baseScore":9.1,"baseSeverity":"CRITICAL"},"scenarios":[{"lang":"en","value":"AV:N - The bug is in nfsd_setattr()/decode_fattr4 on the in-kernel NFS server; a remote NFSv4 client triggers it by sending SETATTR (or OPEN/CREATE with a size attribute) with a file size greater than S64_MAX over the network.\nAC:L - The attacker fully controls the SETATTR size field and can deterministically supply a u64 > S64_MAX; conversion to signed loff_t and the subsequent notify_change path require no race or attacker-uncontrollable conditions.\nPR:N - Typical nfsd deployments accept AUTH_SYS/AUTH_NULL on reachable exports, so a network peer can obtain a filehandle and assert a writable owner UID without verified credentials; NFSv4 size SETATTR then proceeds with a write stateid from that unauthenticated session.\nUI:N - The attacker alone mounts/looks up and issues SETATTR with an oversized size; no victim user action such as opening a crafted file is required beyond nfsd already exporting a filesystem.\nS:U - Impact is corruption of the NFS server's own kernel/filesystem state under the same OS security authority; there is no VM escape, IOMMU bypass, or other cross-boundary effect.\nC:N - The flaw turns an oversized size into a negative ia_size and drives a destructive truncate/corruption path; it does not create an OOB/UAF read or other information-disclosure primitive.\nI:H - At the time of this bug, inode_newsize_ok() did not reject negative offsets, so notify_change applied ia_size < 0 through setattr_prepare into ext4/xfs truncate paths, writing a negative i_size/i_disksize and freeing file blocks—documented filesystem corruption.\nA:H - Corrupting inode size metadata and truncating file contents on the exported filesystem denies service for that data and can destabilize subsequent VFS/fs operations on the corrupted inode, matching High availability impact for a network-triggered server-side corruption."}]}],"affected":[{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["fs/nfsd/vfs.c"],"versions":[{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"d2211e6e34d0755f35e2f8c22d81999fa81cfc71","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"38d02ba22e43b6fc7d291cf724bc6e3b7be6626b","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"8e0ecaf7a7e57b30284d6b3289cc436100fadc48","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"da22ca1ad548429d7822011c54cfe210718e0aa7","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"e6faac3f58c7c4176b66f63def17a34232a17b0e","status":"affected","versionType":"git"}]},{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["fs/nfsd/vfs.c"],"versions":[{"version":"2.6.12","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","lessThan":"2.6.12","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.4.295","lessThanOrEqual":"5.4.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.10.220","lessThanOrEqual":"5.10.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.15.24","lessThanOrEqual":"5.15.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.16.10","lessThanOrEqual":"5.16.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.17","lessThanOrEqual":"*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}]}],"cpeApplicability":[{"nodes":[{"operator":"OR","negate":false,"cpeMatch":[{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"5.4.295"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"5.10.220"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"5.15.24"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"5.16.10"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"5.17"}]}]}],"references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d2211e6e34d0755f35e2f8c22d81999fa81cfc71"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/38d02ba22e43b6fc7d291cf724bc6e3b7be6626b"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/8e0ecaf7a7e57b30284d6b3289cc436100fadc48"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/da22ca1ad548429d7822011c54cfe210718e0aa7"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/e6faac3f58c7c4176b66f63def17a34232a17b0e"}],"title":"NFSD:
