The client as\n> a result indefinitely retries the request.\n\nThe Linux NFS client does not handle NFS?ERR_INVAL, even though all\nNFS specifications permit servers to return that status code for a\nREAD.\n\nInstead of NFS?ERR_INVAL, have out-of-range READ requests succeed\nand return a short result. Set the EOF flag in the result to prevent\nthe client from retrying the READ request. This behavior appears to\nbe consistent with Solaris NFS servers.\n\nNote that NFSv3 and NFSv4 use u64 offset values on the wire. These\nmust be converted to loff_t internally before use -- an implicit\ntype cast is not adequate for this purpose. Otherwise VFS checks\nagainst sb->s_maxbytes do not work properly."}],"metrics":[{"cvssV3_1":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","baseScore":7.5,"baseSeverity":"HIGH"},"scenarios":[{"lang":"en","value":"AV:N - The bug is in the in-kernel NFS server (nfsd3_proc_read / nfsd4_read) and is reached by processing NFSv3/v4 READ RPCs over the network (TCP/UDP 2049); a remote NFS client triggers it by reading near OFFSET_MAX.\nAC:L - An attacker who can write to an export on a filesystem that allows MAX_LFS_FILESIZE (e.g. XFS) can create a sparse file of size OFFSET_MAX and then read it; the loff_t overflow and NFSERR_INVAL response occur reliably with no race or other condition outside attacker control.\nPR:N - Typical nfsd deployments use AUTH_SYS/AUTH_NULL with IP-based exports, so a remote peer that can reach the export self-asserts credentials with no cryptographic authentication and can open/read (and create) files that exercise the READ path.\nUI:N - The attacker drives file creation and the triggering READ entirely via NFS RPCs; no separate action by a victim user or administrator on the server is required.\nS:U - Impact is confined to the NFS server and its Linux clients’ use of that service within the same host/kernel authority; there is no VM escape, IOMMU bypass, or other cross-boundary scope change.\nC:N - The defect only causes an out-of-range READ to fail with NFSERR_INVAL after VFS rejects the overflowing loff_t; there is no out-of-bounds read, UAF, or other information-disclosure primitive.\nI:N - There is no memory corruption, OOB write, or attacker-controlled modification of kernel or file data—only a protocol error return for an overflowing offset/length pair.\nA:H - Linux NFS clients treat NFSERR_INVAL as non-fatal, drop the page without PageError, and indefinitely reissue the READ, hanging the reader and continuously hammering nfsd; infinite retry/hang is high availability impact."}]}],"affected":[{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["fs/nfsd/nfs3proc.c","fs/nfsd/nfs4proc.c","fs/nfsd/nfs4xdr.c"],"versions":[{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"1726a39b0879acfb490b22dca643f26f4f907da9","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"c6eff5c4277146a78b4fb8c9b668dd64542c41b0","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"44502aca8e02ab32d6b0eb52e006a5ec9402719b","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2","lessThan":"0cb4d23ae08c48f6bf3c29a8e5c4a74b8388b960","status":"affected","versionType":"git"}]},{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["fs/nfsd/nfs3proc.c","fs/nfsd/nfs4proc.c","fs/nfsd/nfs4xdr.c"],"versions":[{"version":"2.6.12","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","lessThan":"2.6.12","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.10.220","lessThanOrEqual":"5.10.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.15.24","lessThanOrEqual":"5.15.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.16.10","lessThanOrEqual":"5.16.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.17","lessThanOrEqual":"*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}]}],"cpeApplicability":[{"nodes":[{"operator":"OR","negate":false,"cpeMatch":[{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"5.10.220"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"5.15.24"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"5.16.10"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"2.6.12","versionEndExcluding":"5.17"}]}]}],"references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1726a39b0879acfb490b22dca643f26f4f907da9"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/c6eff5c4277146a78b4fb8c9b668dd64542c41b0"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/44502aca8e02ab32d6b0eb52e006a5ec9402719b"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/0cb4d23ae08c48f6bf3c29a8e5c4a74b8388b960"}],"title":"NFSD: Fix the behavior of READ near OFFSET_MAX","x_generator":{"engine":"bippy-1.2.0"}},"adp":[{"providerMetadata":{"orgId":"af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108","shortName":"CVE","dateUpdated":"2024-08-03T15:25:01.549Z"},"title":"CVE Program Container","references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1726a39b0879acfb490b22dca643f26f4f907da9","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/c6eff5c4277146a78b4fb8c9b668dd64542c41b0","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/44502aca8e02ab32d6b0eb52e006a5ec9402719b","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/0cb4d23ae08c48f6bf3c29a8e5c4a74b8388b960","tags":["x_transferred"]}]},{"metrics":[{"other":{"type":"ssvc","content":{"id":"CVE-2022-48827","role":"CISA Coordinator","options":[{"Exploitation":"none"},{"Automatable":"no"},{"Technical Impact":"partial"}],"version":"2.0.3","timestamp":"2024-09-10T16:57:40.257913Z"}}}],"title":"CISA ADP Vulnrichment","providerMetadata":{"orgId":"134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0","shortName":"CISA-ADP","dateUpdated":"2024-09-11T17:34:11.464Z"}},{"x_adpType":"supplier","providerMetadata":{"orgId":"0b142b55-0307-4c5a-b3c9-f314f3fb7c5e","shortName":"siemens-SADP","dateUpdated":"2026-05-12T10:12:32.268Z"},"affected":[{"vendor":"Siemens","product":"RUGGEDCOM RST2428P","versions":[{"status":"unaffected","version":"0","lessThan":"*","versionType":"custom"}],"defaultStatus":"unknown"},{"vendor":"Siemens","product":"SCALANCE XC-300/XR-300/XC-400/XR-500WG/XR-500 family","versions":[{"status":"unaffected","version":"0","lessThan":"*","versionType":"custom"}],"defaultStatus":"unknown"},{"vendor":"Siemens","product":"SCALANCE XCM-/XRM-/XCH-/XRH-300 family","versions":[{"status":"unaffected","version":"0","lessThan":"*","versionType":"custom"}],"defaultStatus":"unknown"},{"vendor":"Siemens","product":"SIMATIC S7-1500 TM MFP - GNU/Linux subsystem","versions":[{"status":"affected","version":"0","lessThan":"*","versionType":"custom"}],"defaultStatus":"unknown"}],"references":[{"url":"https://cert-portal.siemens.com/productcert/html/ssa-265688.html"},{"url":"https://cert-portal.siemens.com/productcert/html/ssa-355557.html"}]}]}}
