The abort occurs due to\ntimeout.\n\nWhen the timeout occurs, the SAS_TASK_STATE_ABORTED flag is set and the\nsas_task is freed in pm8001_exec_internal_tmf_task().\n\nHowever, if the I/O completion occurs later, the I/O completion still\nthinks that the sas_task is available. Fix this by clearing the ccb->task\nif the TMF times out - the I/O completion handler does nothing if this\npointer is cleared."}],"metrics":[{"cvssV3_1":{"version":"3.1","vectorString":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","baseScore":7.8,"baseSeverity":"HIGH"},"scenarios":[{"lang":"en","value":"AV:L - The UAF is in the pm8001 PCIe SAS HBA driver and is reached via the local SCSI/block I/O and error-handling path (libsas EH → lldd_abort_task/query_task/lu_reset → pm8001_issue_ssp_tmf), not via network packets or physical device attachment.\nAC:L - An attacker who can submit I/O can drive SCSI EH into the TMF path; when the target/link is unresponsive (the common EH case), the 20s TMF timeout frees the sas_task while ccb->task remains set, leaving a wide, reliable window for the later mpi_ssp_completion UAF.\nPR:L - Triggering requires only unprivileged local access to a block/SCSI device backed by the pm8001 HBA (e.g., disk-group or container volume access), not real root or init-namespace admin privileges.\nUI:N - No victim action is required; the attacker initiates I/O that leads to EH/TMF and the subsequent completion UAF without cooperation from another user.\nS:U - This is a standard in-kernel use-after-free within the host OS authority and does not cross a VM, IOMMU, or other security boundary.\nC:H - mpi_ssp_completion loads the dangling ccb->task and reads fields from the freed sas_task, so a UAF gives an attacker-controlled object and a high-impact information-disclosure primitive.\nI:H - The completion path writes into the freed sas_task (task_status/state flags) and may invoke t->task_done(t), yielding a classic heap UAF write/control-flow hijack primitive for arbitrary code execution.\nA:H - Use of the freed sas_task in interrupt/completion context can oops/panic the kernel even without a full exploit, so availability impact is high."}]}],"affected":[{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"unaffected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["drivers/scsi/pm8001/pm8001_sas.c"],"versions":[{"version":"968ee9176a4489ce6d5ee54ff88dadfbff9b95f4","lessThan":"d872e7b5fe38f325f5206b6872746fa02c2b4819","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"d712d3fb484b7fa8d1d57e9ca6f134bb9d8c18b1","lessThan":"3c334cdfd94945b8edb94022a0371a8665b17366","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"d712d3fb484b7fa8d1d57e9ca6f134bb9d8c18b1","lessThan":"510b21442c3a2e3ecc071ba3e666b320e7acdd61","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"d712d3fb484b7fa8d1d57e9ca6f134bb9d8c18b1","lessThan":"61f162aa4381845acbdc7f2be4dfb694d027c018","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"fa3c19ceaa8b4b7c29d710c2c407df57d256a6c5","status":"affected","versionType":"git"},{"version":"5.10.61","lessThan":"5.10.102","status":"affected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.13.13","lessThan":"5.14","status":"affected","versionType":"semver"}]},{"product":"Linux","vendor":"Linux","defaultStatus":"affected","repo":"https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git","programFiles":["drivers/scsi/pm8001/pm8001_sas.c"],"versions":[{"version":"5.14","status":"affected"},{"version":"0","lessThan":"5.14","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.10.102","lessThanOrEqual":"5.10.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.15.25","lessThanOrEqual":"5.15.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.16.11","lessThanOrEqual":"5.16.*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"semver"},{"version":"5.17","lessThanOrEqual":"*","status":"unaffected","versionType":"original_commit_for_fix"}]}],"cpeApplicability":[{"nodes":[{"operator":"OR","negate":false,"cpeMatch":[{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.10.61","versionEndExcluding":"5.10.102"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.14","versionEndExcluding":"5.15.25"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.14","versionEndExcluding":"5.16.11"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.14","versionEndExcluding":"5.17"},{"vulnerable":true,"criteria":"cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*","versionStartIncluding":"5.13.13"}]}]}],"references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d872e7b5fe38f325f5206b6872746fa02c2b4819"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/3c334cdfd94945b8edb94022a0371a8665b17366"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/510b21442c3a2e3ecc071ba3e666b320e7acdd61"},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/61f162aa4381845acbdc7f2be4dfb694d027c018"}],"title":"scsi: pm8001: Fix use-after-free for aborted TMF sas_task","x_generator":{"engine":"bippy-1.2.0"}},"adp":[{"providerMetadata":{"orgId":"af854a3a-2127-422b-91ae-364da2661108","shortName":"CVE","dateUpdated":"2024-08-03T15:25:00.417Z"},"title":"CVE Program Container","references":[{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d872e7b5fe38f325f5206b6872746fa02c2b4819","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/3c334cdfd94945b8edb94022a0371a8665b17366","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/510b21442c3a2e3ecc071ba3e666b320e7acdd61","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/61f162aa4381845acbdc7f2be4dfb694d027c018","tags":["x_transferred"]}]},{"metrics":[{"other":{"type":"ssvc","content":{"id":"CVE-2022-48791","role":"CISA Coordinator","options":[{"Exploitation":"none"},{"Automatable":"no"},{"Technical Impact":"partial"}],"version":"2.0.3","timestamp":"2024-09-10T16:59:35.678672Z"}}}],"title":"CISA ADP Vulnrichment","providerMetadata":{"orgId":"134c704f-9b21-4f2e-91b3-4a467353bcc0","shortName":"CISA-ADP","dateUpdated":"2024-09-11T17:34:15.736Z"}}]}}
